While we are still awaiting the official report from Forte, the PushCoin technology team has narrowed down a possible cause for the system outage.
The problem started at 7:14am, February 3, 2020 and lasted until 8:54am. During the outage, the Forte servers appear to have used invalid Security Certificates (SSL). While in effect, the PushCoin systems did not trust to send parents’ payment data to Forte and presented a message on each transaction attempt:
Unable to find valid certification path to requested target
While we wish the error message was more user-friendly, it is important to point out that the PushCoin system correctly enforced security guidelines for online transactions. Not trusting unknown or unsigned security certificates protects against common forms of Internet attacks aimed to capture payment information.
We are happy the problem was resolved by Forte and all systems are fully operational.
